The largest and most important Muslim princely state in the central part of the Deccan Plateau in India. It was founded in 1724 by Niẓām-ul-Mulk (1671-1748), the governor of the Deccan under the Mughal dynasty, who became independent. Successive kings were called Nizams. The majority of the inhabitants were Hindu. After the death of the first Nizam, it became embroiled in battles with Britain, France, Mysore, and the Maratha Kingdom, but in 1998 it came under British protection and became a limited semi-independent princely state with only internal power. When India gained independence, the Nizam asserted its independent status, and in November 1947, he signed a one-year status quo agreement with the Indian government, but the Indian side insisted on annexation, and in September 1948, he sent troops in under the pretext of maintaining public order, which also served to suppress the Telangana struggle.
