This unfinished masterpiece was left behind by the fin de siècle architect Gaudi in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Construction began in 1882 in the Neo-Gothic style as a church dedicated to the Holy Family (Sagrada Familia), and Gaudi became the construction supervisor the following year, working on the design and construction for 43 years until his death. Although only the crypt and the Nativity Façade on the east side were completed during his lifetime, he left behind the entire concept in the form of a maquette. His concept was a Bible carved in stone, or a comprehensive expression of the Catholic faith that mobilized architecture and art, and this Catholic symbolism is blended with an original, rational structure that makes full use of parabolas and hyperboloids.

世紀末の建築家ガウディがスペイン･カタルニャのバルセロナに残した未完の大作。〈聖家族(サグラダ･ファミリア)〉にささげる贖罪教会として1882年ネオ･ゴシック様式で着工，翌年から彼が工事監督者となり，死去するまでの43年間設計施工にあたった。生前に完成したのは地下祭室(クリプタ)と東側の〈キリスト降誕のファサード〉のみだが，彼はマケットという形で全構想を残した。石に刻まれた聖書，もしくは建築と美術を総動員したカトリック信仰の総合的表現というのが彼の構想だが，このカトリック的象徴主義が，放物線や双曲面を駆使した独創的で合理的な構造と混然一体となっている。
