Mount Kasho

Mount Kasho

A mountain in the northwest of Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. It is 1,322 meters above sea level. It is made of conglomerate and sandstone from the Miocene Tertiary Period, and erosion has led to the formation of the Tainai Kuguri Rock. To the south of it, at an altitude of 900 meters, is the famous Soto sect temple, Kashoyama Ryugein Mirokuji Temple, and Mirokuji Temple is usually referred to as Kashoyama. It was originally a Tendai sect temple, but converted in the 15th century. It is known for its belief in Tengu, and many members of religious groups from the surrounding area visit the mountain to pray for silkworm farming, good harvests, and prosperous business. It is a 40-minute bus ride from Numata Station, followed by a 45-minute walk from the bus stop.

Mirokuji Temple
An ancient temple built in 848 (Kasho 1). Its mountain name is Mount Kasha. It was founded by Jikaku Daishi Ennin, and converted from Tendai to Soto sect in 1456 (Kosho 2). 群馬県沼田市(ぬまたし)の北西部にある山。標高1322メートル。第三紀中新統の礫岩(れきがん)および砂岩で形成され、侵食が進んで胎内潜(たいないくぐり)岩などがある。その南側の標高900メートルに、曹洞(そうとう)宗の名刹(めいさつ)迦葉山龍華院(りゅうげいん)弥勒寺(みろくじ)があって、通常この弥勒寺をさして迦葉山という。もと天台宗であったが、15世紀に改宗。天狗(てんぐ)信仰で知られ、養蚕、豊作、商売繁盛を願って近隣から講(こう)組織の参詣(さんけい)者が多い。沼田駅からバス40分、下車後徒歩45分。
