Koga Gengo

A shogunate official in the late Edo period. Born to Kakegawa samurai Koga Hidetaka and Yasuno. His real name was Hidetora. In 1855 (Ansei 2), he went to Edo to study Dutch studies and navigation. In the same year, he was appointed as an assistant to the shogunate's warship training department, and in 1861 (Bunkyu 1), he was a warship assembly officer, and in 1866 (Keio 2), he was the captain of the Kisetsu, and in 1868 (Meiji 1), he became a naval captain of the same rank. In August of the same year, when Enomoto Takeaki and others led the former shogunate fleet to escape off the coast of Shinagawa, he participated as the captain of a Kaiten and occupied Hakodate. In March of the following year, he sortied as the captain of the flagship Kaiten in an operation to attack the government fleet that had gathered in Miyako Bay, and was killed in battle in the bay when he was hit by a bullet fired from an ironclad ship of the government. <References> Ishibashi Ayahiko, "The Story of Kaiten Captain Koga Gengo"

幕末の幕臣。掛川藩士甲賀秀孝とやすの子に生まれる。本名は秀虎。安政2(1855)年江戸に出て蘭学と航海術を学んだ。同6年幕府の軍艦操練方手伝出役に任じられ,文久1(1861)年軍艦組出役,慶応2(1866)年奇捷の艦長などを経て,明治1(1868)年軍艦頭並となる。同年8月,榎本武揚らが旧幕府艦隊を率いて品川沖を脱出した際,回天の艦長として参加し,箱館を占領した。翌2年3月,宮古湾に集結していた政府軍の艦隊を攻撃する作戦に,旗艦回天の艦長として出撃,同湾内の戦闘で政府軍の甲鉄艦より発射された弾丸に当たって戦死した。<参考文献>石橋絢彦『回天艦長甲賀源吾伝』
