Primula sieboldii - Primula sieboldii

Japanese: サクラソウ(桜草) - サクラソウ(英語表記)Primula sieboldii
Primula sieboldii - Primula sieboldii
A perennial plant of the Primulaceae family. It is also found in the cool temperate zone of Northeast Asia, such as Eastern Siberia. It grows wild in the wetlands of the mountains and fields of Japan, and is also widely cultivated for ornamental purposes. It produces many 4-10 cm long elliptical leaves with long petioles from underground rhizomes. In April, it produces long upright flower stalks between the leaves, and at the end of the stalks several pink flowers appear in a scattered pattern. The corolla is about 2 cm in diameter, splits into five parts, and unfolds like a cherry blossom, with a tubular base. The five stamens are opposite the lobes of the corolla, and the style of the pistil can be short or long. The flower color varies from white to red to red-purple, and there are many variations in size. It has been actively cultivated in Japan since the Edo period, and there are 200 to 300 horticultural varieties. Collectively, these are called Japanese Primula. Japanese species of the same genus include the large wetland plant Primula japonica, as well as the alpine species Prunus pratense, Prunus arbutus, and Prunus persica.
