Japanese dogwood - Japanese dogwood

Japanese: トサミズキ - とさみずき
Japanese dogwood - Japanese dogwood

A deciduous shrub of the Hamamelidaceae family (APG classification: Hamamelidaceae). It grows to about 3 meters in height. The trunk is yellowish brown and well-branched. The leaves are somewhat thick, oval, 5-10 cm long, softly hairy on the underside, and have low, wavy serrations. The pale yellow flowers open before the leaves, and 7-10 of them appear in a drooping spike in March-April. The fruit is an oblong capsule with two shiny black seeds. It is distributed in Kochi Prefecture and grows on serpentine and limestone ground. Its leaves resemble those of the dogwood, and it was discovered in Tosa, hence the name. It has been cultivated for ornamental purposes since the Edo period, and is still commonly grown as a garden tree in various places today.

There are about 25 species of the Cornus genus distributed in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China, and the Himalayas, and in addition to Cornus japonica, there are three other species in Japan: Cornus kirishimaensis, Cornus kouyasensis, and Cornus hyuugasensis.
