Saku [city] - Saku
A city in eastern Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1961. It occupies the center of the Saku Basin, where the Chikuma River flows north, and the surrounding mountainous areas. It is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the Koumi Line, and the Chubu-Odan Expressway. Iwamurata in the north developed as a post station on the Saku-Koshu Kaido and Nakasendo roads, and as a castle town for the Naito clan. Nozawa in the south is a local commercial town, and the neighboring Nakagomi developed around the Koumi Line station. The surrounding area is mainly rice paddy farming, and medicinal ginseng and Saku carp are its specialties. In 1995, the Saku-Komoro section of the Joshinetsu Expressway was opened, and an industrial park was developed, with electrical equipment manufacturers and others moving in. There is the former Nakagomi School (historic site). In April 2005, Usuda Town in Minamisaku District, Mochizuki Town in Kitasaku District, and Asaka Village were incorporated. It has an area of ​​423.51 km2 . It has a population of 100,552 (2010).

長野県東部の市。1961年市制。千曲(ちくま)川が北流する佐久盆地の中央部と周辺山地を占め,北陸新幹線,小海線,中部横断自動車道が通じる。北部の岩村田は佐久甲州街道と中山道の宿駅,内藤氏の城下町として発達。南部の野沢は地方的商業町,隣接する中込(なかごみ)は小海線の駅を中心に発展。周辺は水田農業を主とし,薬用ニンジン,佐久ゴイを特産。1995年上信越自動車道の佐久―小諸間が開通,工業団地が造成され,電気機器工業などが進出している。旧中込学校(史跡)がある。2005年4月南佐久郡臼田町,北佐久郡望月町,浅科村を編入。423.51km2。10万552人(2010)。
