Zakynthos (island) (English spelling)

Japanese: ザキントス[島]（英語表記）Zákinthos

In addition to its official Greek name, the Italian-based name Zante is also widely used. The island is part of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, and is located 20 km off the coast of the Peloponnese Peninsula at the southern end of the island. It has an area of approximately 410 km2 and a population of 33,000 (1991). It produces raisins, wine, olive oil, and other products. It is especially famous for the beauty of the wildflowers that bloom in spring and autumn. During the classical period, it flourished as a polis, and became part of Rome in the 2nd century. It was part of Venice from the 15th century to the end of the 18th century, and so the influence of Italian culture is still strong today.

このギリシア語の公式名のほかに，ザンテZante島というイタリア語系の名称も広く用いられる。ギリシア西部イオニア諸島に属し，その南端，ペロポネソス半島の沖20kmに位置する島。面積約410km2，人口3万3000(1991)。干しブドウ，ブドウ酒，オリーブ油などを産する。春と秋に咲く野草の美しさは特に有名。古典期にはポリスとして栄え，2世紀にローマの領土となる。15世紀から18世紀末までベネチア領であったので，イタリア系の文化の影響は今も色濃い。
