A nanga painter from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. His given name was Un. He started out with the pen name Kusakumo, but after he was 32 he adopted it as his pen name. He was born as the eldest son of a low-ranking samurai in the Edo residence of the Ashikaga domain. He was taught the basics of nanga by his father, and at the age of eight he studied under Kanai Ushu, a disciple of Tani Buncho and relative by marriage, and later studied waka poetry and the Shijo school of painting under Kato Baio. He also studied under Haruki Nanmei. At the age of 39 he served the Ashikaga domain as an artist, but at the end of the Edo period he was devoted to national affairs, such as establishing a domain school and organizing the Seishintai militia as a loyalist to the emperor. After the Meiji Restoration, he lived in Ashikaga and devoted himself to painting, exhibiting his works at the 1st Domestic Industrial Exposition and other exhibitions, receiving medals, and becoming the 1st Imperial Household Artist in 1890 (Meiji 23). 幕末から明治の南画家。名は芸(うん)。初め字(あざな)を草雲としたが、32歳以後はこれを号とする。足利(あしかが)藩江戸藩邸に下級武士の長男として生まれる。父から南画の手ほどきを受け、8歳のころ谷文晁(ぶんちょう)門下で姻戚(いんせき)にあたる金井烏洲(かないうしゅう)につき、のち加藤梅翁のもとで和歌や四条派の画風を習得。春木南溟(なんめい)にも学んだ。39歳のとき足利藩に絵師として仕えたが、幕末には藩校の設立、また勤皇家として民兵誠心隊を組織するなど国事に奔走。維新後は足利に住んで画業に専念し、第1回内国勧業博覧会ほかの展覧会に出品して賞牌(しょうはい)を受け、1890年(明治23)には第1回帝室技芸員となっている。代表作に『秋山晩暉(しゅうざんばんき)図』などがある。 [星野 鈴] 出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
