1879‐1948 German archaeologist and orientalist. Born in Celle. Originally an architect, he participated in Andre's research in Assur and conducted excavation and research on Oriental culture and ruins from prehistoric times to the early Islamic period from a wide range of perspectives including history, philology, religious studies, art, and archaeology (Samarra, Pasargadae, Persepolis, etc.).
