Ernst Herzfeld

German archaeologist and orientalist. Born in Celle. Originally an architect, he participated in Andre's research in Assur and conducted excavation and research on Oriental culture and ruins from prehistoric times to the early Islamic period from a wide range of perspectives including history, philology, religious studies, art, and archaeology (Samarra, Pasargadae, Persepolis, etc.). Professor at the University of Berlin from 1920 to 1935, and at Princeton University from 1936 to 1944. [Tanabe Katsumi]

ドイツの考古学者，オリエント学者。ツェレ生れ。本来は建築家であったが，アンドレのアッシュールの調査に参加し，先史時代からイスラム初期にかけてのオリエントの文化，遺跡に関し，歴史，文献学，宗教学，美術，考古学など幅広い見地から発掘調査･研究を行った(サーマッラー，パサルガダエ，ペルセポリスなど)。1920‐35年ベルリン大学教授，36‐44年プリンストン大学教授。【田辺勝美】
