…Cicero wrote in his own hand, for example to his friend Atticus, but he usually dictated most of his letters to his secretary Tiro, who kept copies, and Cicero's brothers Quintus and Atticus preserved letters from Cicero, so many of his letters have survived to posterity. Horace left behind letters in verse (long, short, and short hexapods), which started the tradition of epistola poetry, which was inherited by Ovid, the 12th century southern French poets (called breus and letras in medieval Provencal, and ensenhamen for didactic works, and rarely called pistola and epistola), and later Eustache Deschamps, Clement Marot, Petrarch, John Donne, Pope, La Fontaine, Boileau, and others. In the 18th century, Voltaire and André Chénier also produced excellent epistola poetry. …
