Sakarya River (English spelling)

Japanese: サカリヤ[川]（英語表記）Sakarya

This river originates in the mid-west of the Anatolian Plateau in Turkey, flows eastward, then northwestward, and empties into the Black Sea 140km east of the Bosphorus. Its total length is 824km. In August and September 1921, the Turkish National Army led by Kemal Ataturk fought a battle with the Greek army on the banks of this river upstream and won, determining the success of the movement to liberate the Fatherland (Battle of the Sakarya River). In recent years, many huge dams have been built in Porsuk, Saryar, Sakarya, and other places. [Nagaba Hiroshi]
