Torazaburo Araki

A medical scientist from Gunma Prefecture. He graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University Medical School in 1887 (Meiji 20). He practiced medicine in his hometown for a time, but soon became an assistant in the physiology department at his alma mater. In 1889, he went to Germany to study, where he studied physiological chemistry under Hoppe-Sailer at the University of Strasbourg. He returned to Japan in 1895, and became a professor of medicine at the Third Higher School the following year in 1896. In 1897, he received his doctorate in medicine for his thesis "On the Human Sun." In 1899, he became a professor at the Kyoto Imperial University Medical School, where he taught medical chemistry for 16 years until he became the university's president in 1915 (Taisho 4). He served as president of Gakushuin and a Privy Councilor. He was a member of the Imperial Academy and a professor emeritus at Kyoto University. He was a pioneer of medicinal chemistry in Japan, and is well known for his research on the in vivo synthesis of lactic acid. Many talented people came from his school, including Kotake Yashiro (1879-1968).

医学者。群馬県出身。1887年(明治20)東京帝国大学医科大学別課を卒業。一時故郷で医業を開いたが、ほどなく母校の生理学教室の助手となった。1889年ドイツに留学、ストラスブール大学でホッペ・ザイラーに師事、生理化学を研究した。1895年帰国、翌1896年第三高等学校医学教授となり、1897年主論文「ヒトサンについて」で医学博士となった。1899年京都帝国大学医科大学教授となり、1915年(大正4)京大総長になるまで16年間、医化学講座を担任した。学習院院長、枢密顧問官を歴任。帝国学士院会員、京大名誉教授。日本における医化学の先駆であり、乳酸の生体内生成の研究はよく知られ、門下からは古武弥四郎(こたけやしろう)(1879―1968)ら多くの人材が輩出した。
