Experimental forest - Enshuurin

Japanese:
Experimental forest - Enshuurin

These are forests and facilities established by universities with forestry departments and high schools with forestry departments to provide practical training in forestry for students and to be used for testing and research by faculty and staff. This system was adopted from the German forestry education system, and was first established in 1895 (Meiji 28) by the University of Tokyo around Mt. Kiyosumi on the Boso Peninsula. The management of experimental forests is left to the discretion of the universities and high schools, but they are not only expected to function as practical forests, sample forests, and test and research forests, but also to secure profits through forestry management. Some elementary and junior high schools have forests attached to them called school forests, but these differ from experimental forests in that their main purpose is to be managed as basic school assets.
