Kantoi clothing

Japanese:
Kantoi clothing

A garment worn with a hole in the center of the fabric through which the head is passed. It is commonly seen in primitive societies and is considered one of the basic styles of clothing. The poncho is a prime example, but it was originally the clothing of the Indians who lived in the Andes Mountains of South America. Originally, the term referred to a fabric made of a blend of hemp and llama hair, but after the Spanish conquered Peru in the 16th century, it came to refer to the style of clothing.

In Japan, an example of this is the ryoto (pants) from the Nara period, and going back even further, there is a description in the Gishiwajinden (Records of the Wa People), which states, "A rectangular piece of cloth was made by drilling a hole in the center and putting the head through it to make clothing." Today, it is used in a variety of ways, from practical clothing such as outerwear to protect against the cold and lounging at home, to party dresses.
