…The goods exchanged at these markets were mostly either official taxes or items to be delivered to them, and the majority of them were used by local lords such as jito, shigeshi, and komon to procure tribute to the central manorial lord or to exchange their own possessions for money. Therefore, many of the merchants who came and went were merchants who traded between distant regions, bringing local specialties from the capital and other regions from the center and buying local specialties from the region. It was from the end of the Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period that the general public from the surrounding farming villages began to participate in the markets and exchange. …
