Fulbe tribe - Fulbe (English spelling)
The Fulani are the inhabitants of the savannah region from the Central African Republic to Senegal. Their population is estimated at over 15 million. They speak Fulfulde, a Niger-Congo language. They were originally cattle herders, but as the economy changed, more and more of them became sedentary people who lived partly as farmers and partly as cattle herders. The social structure of the nomadic Fulbe is more egalitarian than the neighboring Hausa and sedentary Fulbe. They practice polygamy. Physically, they show non-black characteristics such as copper-colored skin, thin hooked noses, thin lips, and slim figures, but they have also intermarried with Negroids to a great extent. Some scholars believe that historically, they were a people who migrated westward from the Nile River basin along the southern edge of the Sahara. They became Muslims early on and played a major role in the spread of Islam in West Africa and the formation of various kingdoms.
