Sakae [village] - Sakae

Japanese: 栄[村] - さかえ

A village in Shimominochi County, in the northeastern tip of Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,896 (1995). Located at the northeastern edge of the prefecture, the village borders Niigata Prefecture to the north and east, and Gunma Prefecture to the east. The Chikuma River flows east through the northern part of the village, with the JR Iiyama Line and National Route 117 running along its left bank. 95% of the village's total area is covered by forests and fields, and the village receives up to 2-3 meters of snow in winter, making it one of the snowiest areas in the country. There are a few lowlands along the Chikuma River where rice is grown, and forestry is also thriving. The center of tourism is in the southeastern part of the prefecture, where Akiyamago in the Nakatsugawa Gorge has long been known as a hidden area where the legend of the Heike fugitives was born, and as a treasure trove of trout.

長野県北東端，下水内（しもみのち）郡の村。人口2896(1995)。県の北東端にある村で，北と東は新潟県，東は群馬県と接する。北部を千曲川が東流し，その左岸側をJR飯山線，国道117号線が通る。総面積の95％を山林･原野が占める山村で，冬季の積雪は2～3mにも達し，全国屈指の豪雪地帯である。千曲川沿いに低地が若干あって水稲が作られるほか，林業が盛ん。観光の中心は南東部にあって，古くから平家落人伝説の秘境として知られ，また岩魚の宝庫としても知られる中津川峡谷の秋山郷。
