This seaweed belongs to the brown algae order Polytrichum commune and the family Polytrichum commune. The algae are rod-shaped with alternate branches growing from the central axis, forming a cluster of about 30 cm in length. Small side branches grow at the ends of the branches, which carry the reproductive organs. This shape is reminiscent of a hairy spear.
