A general term for coelenterates (Cnidarians) belonging to the order Zoantharia of the class Anthozoa. A thin membrane or thick disc-like coenchyma covers the body of rocks, shells, or living animals, and polyps arise irregularly from the coenchyma. They are generally found in areas of coral reefs in subtropical and tropical waters that dry up at low tide. Polyps vary in size, from those that extend cylindrically from the coenchyma to those that protrude slightly from the surface of the coenchyma. Polyps have about 20 to 50 tentacles, and some contain sand grains in the coenchyma or polyp disc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
