…A style that was produced in various parts of Europe between 1370 and 1420, mainly in paintings, but also in sculpture and crafts. After the Gothic style spread from the Île-de-France in northern France to various parts of Europe and took root in the 13th century, from the mid-14th century, there was frequent mutual exchange among several centers, rather than one-sided influence, and a homogenous tendency was formed. The international nature of this process of formation led to the name "International Gothic Style." It began in the late 19th century when French art historian L. Courajod recognized "universal Gothicism" as an "international tendency" in European art around 1400. …
