A type of soil that develops on cool temperate steppes. The name comes from the Russian slang for black soil. It is extremely fertile and forms the breadbasket of Europe (the black soil zone). It is composed of a thick black humus layer with a well-developed aggregate structure, a carbonate accumulation layer, and a parent material (usually calcareous sediments such as loess), and characteristic calcium carbonate precipitates can be seen in the carbonate accumulation layer.
