Inspector General of Education

The central body that supervised education in the Army. Its predecessor was the Inspectorate General, established in 1887 (Meiji 20), which was an organization that reported directly to the Emperor and whose duties included "planning for uniformity in the training of the Army's military forces." In January 1898, the Inspectorate General was abolished and the Inspector General of Education was newly established. This Inspector General of Education was responsible for improving various regulations and codes related to education under the jurisdiction of the Minister of the Army. In April 1900 (Meiji 33), the Inspector General of Education Ordinance was fundamentally revised, and the Inspector General of Education was placed directly under the Emperor and its mission changed to "planning for uniformity and progress in education for the Army as a whole." From then until its abolition in 1945 (Showa 20), the Inspector General of Education was one of the three Chiefs of the Army, along with the Minister of the Army and the Chief of Staff.

陸軍の教育を管轄した中央機関。その前身は1887年（明治20）に設置された監軍部で、監軍部の職権の一つに「陸軍軍隊練成の斉一を規画する」ことがあげられ、天皇に直属する機関であった。98年1月、監軍部を廃止して、新たに教育総監部が設置された。この教育総監部は陸軍大臣の管轄下に教育に関する諸条規、典範の改良を図ることを任務としていた。1900年（明治33）4月教育総監部条例が根本的に改正され、教育総監は天皇に直隷し、「陸軍全般の教育の斉一進歩を規画する」ことが任務となった。以後45年（昭和20）に廃止されるまで、教育総監は、陸軍大臣、参謀総長と並ぶ陸軍三長官の一人であった。
