Southey, Robert
Born: August 12, 1774, Bristol
[died] March 21, 1843, Keswick, Cumberland. British poet and biographer. At one time he was an ardent supporter of the French Revolution, and together with S. Coleridge planned to build an ideal egalitarian society on the banks of the Susquehanna River in America, but later became a staunch conservative. After 1803 he settled in Keswick in the so-called "Lake District," and formed a friendship with Wordsworth. He remained a hardworking professional writer, leaving behind a large number of poems, histories, essays, and biographies. In 1813 he became Poet Laureate. His long poems, such as The Curse of Kehama (1810), which was once highly popular, are no longer read, and today he is remembered for a few lyric poems as one of the Lake Poets, and for The Life of Nelson (13).
