Nobuyuki Katagami

A critic and Russian literature scholar of the Meiji and Taisho periods. His pen name was Tengen. He was born in Ehime Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of English Literature at Waseda University in 1906. At the recommendation of Shimamura Hogetsu, he became a reporter for Waseda Bungaku and taught at his alma mater. He became a professor in the same year. His theories of naturalism, such as "Unresolved Literature" and "Naturalism in the View of Life" (both published in 1907), show a clear emphasis on "subjectivity," and his collection of essays, "The Demands of Life and Literature" (1913), also took on a stronger idealistic tone. He studied in Russia in 1915, and founded the Department of Russian Literature at Waseda University after returning to Japan. His collection of essays, "Literary Criticism" (1926), shows the influence of proletarian literature. He is also noted for his unique ideas and somewhat peculiar humanity. <Works> "Katagami Shin Complete Works," 3 volumes

明治大正期の評論家,ロシア文学者。号天弦。愛媛県生まれ。明治39(1906)年,早大英文科卒業。島村抱月のすすめで『早稲田文学』の記者となり,母校の教壇にも立つ。同43年教授。「無解決の文学」「人生観上の自然主義」(ともに1907年)などの自然主義論には「主観」を重んじる姿勢が顕著で,評論集『生の要求と文学』(1913)になると理想主義的色彩も強まった。大正4(1915)年にロシアに留学,帰国後早大に露文科を創設。評論集『文学評論』(1926)などにはプロレタリア文学などの影響もみられる。個性的な思想とやや特異な人間性も注目されている。<著作>『片上伸全集』全3巻
