?‐1395 Inventor of gunpowder in the late Goryeo Dynasty of Korea. Born in Yeongju. Recognizing the effectiveness of gunpowder as a means of repelling Japanese pirates, whose attacks were becoming increasingly severe at the time, he learned how to make it from a Chinese merchant and persuaded the government to establish the Hwadokan (Huodokan), where he was responsible for the manufacture of gunpowder and firearms and the construction of warships equipped with firearms as its director. In 1380, when Japanese pirates attacked Jinpo at the mouth of the Geum River, he used these weapons to deal a major blow and was appointed as a governor of the city of Chimon in recognition of his achievements. His son Choi Hae-san also passed on his gunpowder-making methods and served the Yi Dynasty. [Kitamura Hideto] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
