Washi paper produced in Misumi-cho, Hamada City, and Sakurae-cho, Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture. Particularly high-quality washi paper made from locally grown paper mulberry was known as "Sekishu-banshi." It is also called Iwami-banshi. There is a theory that Kakinomoto no Hitomaro taught the manufacturing method to the general public during the Nara period. Iwami Province is listed as a paper-producing area in the Engishiki (927). It is thought to have been actively produced in the Middle Ages as well. It is of high quality and is often used for writing and painting paper. In the Edo period, the Tsuwano and Hamada domains had a strict paper monopoly system, and the name Sekishu-banshi was widely known. It was designated as a traditional craft by the country in 1989. The manufacturing technique was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property by the country in 1969. It was registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2009, and in 2014 it was relisted as "Washi: Japanese Handmade Paper Techniques" along with Hosokawa-shi and Honmino-shi. → Related topics Ogawa [town] | Hamada [city] | Misumi [town] | Mino [city] | Mino paper | Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
