Located in the central South Pacific, northeast of Tahiti, this archipelago of about 80 atolls belongs to French Polynesia. It is also known as the Tuamotu Archipelago. The main island is Rangiroa. Magellan arrived in 1521, and it has been a French colony since 1880. It produces phosphate rock, copra, and pearl oysters. It has an area of 690 km2 . The southern Gambier Islands are generally included in the Tuamotu Archipelago. Mururoa Atoll, where French nuclear tests were conducted, is located in the southern Gambier Islands.
