228 BCE - 160 BCE A Roman general from a distinguished patrician family. Father of Scipio the Younger. Distinguished in the subjugation of Spain and Liguria, he led the Third Macedonian War as consul in 168 BC. He defeated King Perseus in the Battle of Pydna, solidifying Rome's dominance in the East. He returned in triumph after dealing with the aftermath of the war, which included the enslavement of the entire population of the Morosi nation in the Epirus region (approximately 150,000 people). His spoils of war allowed the Roman people to be exempt from direct taxes thereafter. He was also known as a fan of Hellenism.
