The ancient name of the Menderes River in Turkey, which flows west through Asia Minor and empties into the Aegean Sea. Its ancient Greek name was Maeander. In art history, it is used as a general term for patterns with meandering decorative motifs (swastikas, lightning patterns, continuous wave crest patterns, etc.) named after this meandering river. Particularly during the period of the Geometric style in Greek art, continuous patterns showing various variations using the as the basic unit were popular and decorated pottery during the heyday of this period (9th to 8th centuries BC).
