Zaitsev, Boris Konstantinovich
Born: February 10, 1881 in Oryol
[Died] January 22, 1972, Paris Russian novelist. Born into a family of mining engineers, he enrolled in Moscow's Higher Technical School, but was expelled for participating in student protests. He began writing around 1901, and was recognized by A. Chekhov and A. Kuprin, which led to his career as a writer. Among his early representative works are Agrafena (1908), which tells the life story of a peasant woman, and Golubaya zvezda (18), which depicts a Moscow intellectual. Characterized by impressionistic techniques, a mystical view of life, and Christian humanism, this writer went into exile in 1921 and continued writing in Paris from 1924. Attention has been drawn to such autobiographies as Dalëkaya strana (25), Tishina (48), and Yunost' (50), as well as biographies of I. Turgenev, V. Zhukovsky, and A. Chekhov, and a Russian translation of Dante's Divine Comedy.
