The former name of a town (Takebe-cho) in Mitsu-gun, central Okayama Prefecture. It is currently a district in Kita-ku, Okayama City. It is located in the midstream of the Asahi River. In 1967 (Showa 42), Takebe-cho (established as a town in 1955) on the right bank of the Asahi River and Fukuwatari-cho (established as a town in 1922) in Kume-gun on the left bank merged to form the new Takebe Town, with its town hall located in Fukuwatari. In 2007 (Heisei 19), it was incorporated into Okayama City. The JR Tsuyama Line, National Routes 53 and 484 run through it. The former town area is bordered by the Asahi River, and lies in Mimasaka Province to the east and Bitchu Province to the west. During the Edo period, Fukuwatari was located halfway between the castle towns of Okayama and Tsuyama, and flourished as a post town for traffic to and from Tsuyama and as a stopover on the Asahikawa water transport route, with the Tsuyama domain's guard post located there. Takebe was the encampment town of the Ikeda clan, a chief retainer of the Okayama domain. Rice and dairy farming are the main agricultural industries. There are small and medium-sized factories producing clothing, electrical machinery parts, etc., and many people commute to the central city of Okayama. The prefectural Asahikawa Dam is located in Asahikawa.
