[Died] July 22, 1976. London. British archaeologist born in Scotland. After serving as director of the National Museum of Wales and the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, he served as director of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1944 to 1948. While engaged in excavation and research at ruins throughout India, he contributed to the training of Indian and Pakistani archaeologists. After returning to India, he became a professor at the University of London (1948-55). He made great contributions in many fields, including Indian archaeology, especially the Indus civilization, historical archaeology of the Roman Empire, and archaeological theory. His major works include "Rome Beyond the Imperial Frontiers" (1954) and "The Indus Civilization" (60).

[Died] June 4, 1887. Maron, New York. American politician. After working as a lawyer and businessman in Vermont, he was active as a Republican in New York State. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863 and from 1875 to 1877. He served as Vice President under President R. Hayes from 1877 to 1881.
