Hou Wai-lu (English name)

Died September 14, 1987. Beijing Chinese historian. Honorary Director of the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Political Consultative Conference. Studied in Paris, returned to Japan and took up a teaching position in Harbin. Later, in his late 20s, he was invited to Peking University, where he translated Das Kapital together with Wang Sihua. He also became president of Northwestern University, and visited Japan as a member of a Chinese academic delegation in 1963. In 1967, he was declared an anti-socialist and persecuted, but was later reinstated. His major works include A General History of Chinese Thought (6 volumes, 1957-60), which he co-edited, as well as An Essay on the History of Chinese Feudal Society, A History of Modern Chinese Philosophy, and An Outline of the History of Chinese Thought.

中国の歴史学者。中国社会科学院歴史研究所名誉所長。中国政治協商会議常務委員。パリに留学し，帰国後ハルビン (哈爾浜) で教職につき，のち 20代後半で早くも北京大学に迎えられ，王思華と『資本論』を共訳。西北大学校長にもなり，1963年には中国学術代表団員として来日。 67年に反社会主義分子と断定され迫害されたが，復帰。主著に，共同編集した『中国思想通史』 (6巻，1957～60) ，ほかに『中国封建社会史論』『中国近代哲学史』『中国思想史綱』などがある。
