Karako Dance

Japanese:
Karako Dance

This dance is a Bugaku-style dance handed down in Konnoura, Ushimado Town, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture. It is performed by 7-8 year old boys in Chinese costumes, accompanied by Chinese songs sung by young men, at the autumn festival of Yaku Shrine on the fourth Sunday of October (originally the 24th). It is said that it began when Empress Jingu stopped here on her way back from an expedition to the Three Kingdoms of Korea, and had them dance to soothe her travelling spirit. It is likely that Ushimado Port was a prosperous and open port since ancient times, and so it may have been handed down from Korea and turned into a children's dance. The Chinese songs are meaningless, such as "Sachaa waan-e haa-eyan-yawa...". The music is played on small drums and flutes. The dance lasts for about 10 minutes, but it is a beautiful, exotic dance with a relaxed tempo performed by two boys. Along with the Ayaura Sword Dance, it has been designated a National Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
