Oki is a former town in Oki County, occupying the eastern part of Dogo Island in the Oki Islands of Shimane Prefecture. Saigo, in the center of the area where the Oki Subprefecture is located, faces Saigo Bay and was a port of call for the Nishimawari Shipping Line. It is also a base for squid fishing and other fishing activities. Oki Airport is located there. It belongs to Daisen-Oki National Park and has many historical sites, including the remains of Oki Kokubunji Temple (historic site) and Tamawakasu-no-Mikoto Shrine. In October 2004, it merged with the villages of Fuse, Goka, and Tsuma in Oki County to become a town, Okinoshima Town. Area: 122.32 km2 . Population: 12,851 (2003). 島根県隠岐(おき)諸島島後(どうご)東部を占める隠岐郡の旧町。隠岐支庁がある中心の西郷は西郷湾に臨み,西廻海運寄港地であった。イカ釣などの漁業根拠地でもある。隠岐空港がある。大山(だいせん)隠岐国立公園に属し,隠岐国分寺跡(史跡),玉若酢命神社など史跡も多い。2004年10月隠岐郡布施村,五箇村,都万村と合併し町制,隠岐の島町となる。122.32km2。1万2851人(2003)。
