Jomon Transgression

Japanese:
Jomon Transgression

As a result of the rise in sea levels after the last glacial period, the sea penetrated deeper into the coastline around Japan than the current coastline. It is called the Jomon Transgression because it occurred during the Early to Early Jomon period. The existence of the Jomon Transgression was known in the 1920s, when maps of the Jomon coastline were made due to the fact that Jomon shell mounds were found inland on the Kanto Plain. The time when the transgression reached its greatest extent varies by region, but is generally considered to have occurred between 7,000 and 6,000 years ago. This corresponds to the time when sea levels around Japan rose the most.
