A southern state in the United States. Abbreviated as Ark. or AR. The Arkansas River flows through the center from west to east, and the northern part is the Ozark Plateau. It is an agricultural state, and in recent years has produced soybeans and rice. It also has resources such as oil, coal, and bauxite, but its economic level is low. It became a U.S. territory in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase, and joined the Union in 1836. It is religiously and politically conservative. There are many black people, and in 1957 riots broke out in Little Rock over coeducational schools for whites and blacks.
