Born: February 11, 1908 in Natal, North Sumatra [Died] July 17, 1994. Jakarta Indonesian poet, novelist, critic and linguist. After graduating from a teachers' college, he studied law and received his bachelor's degree in 1942. In 1933, he founded the literary magazine Pejanga Baru with Almain Pane and others. During the Japanese military administration, he led the Indonesian Language Committee and worked hard to establish academic terminology. He is a leading figure in the intellectual world, having written works that discuss not only language and literature but also Indonesian culture in general. He was chairman of the Jakarta Arts Institute. His representative novels include Lajar Terkembang (The Unfolded Sails) (1936) and Grotta Azzurra (1970-1971).
