Aeneas

A Trojan hero in Greek and Roman legend. His Greek name was Aineias or Aineas. He was the son of Anchises and the goddess Aphrodite. He was the bravest general after Hector. He escaped the fall of Troy with his father Anchises and son Ascanius, and traveled around the Greek mainland, establishing capitals in various states and building temples to Aphrodite. He fell in love with Queen Dido in Carthage, but entered Rome by divine command, pacified the tribes of the four continents, became king of Rome, and built the foundations of the country. His descendant was called Romulus, and the story of the founding of the country is sung in Virgil's great epic poem, the Aeneid.

ギリシア・ローマ伝説で，トロイアの英雄。ギリシア名はアイネイアスAineiasないしアイネアスAineas。アンキセスと女神アフロディテの子。ヘクトルに次ぐ勇将。父アンキセス，子アスカニウスAscaniusとともにトロイア落城からのがれてギリシア本土を巡り，諸邦に都を建てアフロディテの神殿を建立した。カルタゴで女王ディドと恋におちたこともあったが，神命によりローマに入り，四周の部族を平定してローマ王となり，国の基礎を築いた。その子孫がロムルスといわれ，建国の経緯をうたいあげたのがウェルギリウスの大叙事詩《アエネイス》。
