[1] 〘名〙① 西行にゆかりのある桜。特に、京都市嵯峨の法輪寺の南にある桜。昔、西行法師が「詠(なが)むとて花にもいたく馴れぬれば散る別こそ悲しかりけれ」〔山家集（１２Ｃ後）上〕と歌ったところから名づけられたと伝える。《季・春》※俳諧・誹諧之連歌（飛梅千句）（1540）何第二「藤の花さけるは定家かづらにて西行ざくらうつろへるころ」② 京都の祇園会(ぎおんえ)に出す山車(だし)、黒主山(くろぬしやま)の異称。西行桜山。※花洛細見図（1704）六「黒主山世にさいきゃうさくらともいふ。是はつらゆき古今の序に大ともの黒ぬしが哥をひはんせし詞より出たり」[2][一] 謡曲。三、四番目物。各流。世阿彌作。西行が庵室の桜を静かに楽しもうとしていると都から大ぜいの人が花見に訪れ、断わりきれず「花見にと群れつつ人の来るのみぞあたら桜のとがにはありける」〔山家集（１２Ｃ後）上〕と諦めて門を開く。その夜の夢に桜の精の老人が現われて、西行の歌をとがめ、花の名所を語り、舞を舞う。[二] 箏曲。菊崎検校(けんぎょう)作。歌詞は謡曲「西行桜」から採っている。
