Brunei is a small state in terms of both population and area, but this does not mean it needs a complex administrative system. It has a constitutional monarchy, and the current king is Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah (1946- ), who ascended to the throne in 1967. Parliament was dissolved in February 1984, immediately after independence, and the constitution has been suspended, so the country is essentially an autocratic state run by the king.
