Siegerland

…Sauerland is a mountainous region between the Sieg River in the south and the Ruhr and Möhne Rivers in the north. It is not suitable for agriculture, so mining and industry developed there early on. The development of the iron processing industry, which smelted and processed iron ore from Siegerland using abundant forest and hydraulic resources, made the Mark in the western part of the Sauerland the most industrialized region of Brandenburg-Prussia from the mid-17th century onwards, and it also became the starting point of the rapid heavy industrialization of the Ruhr region in the 19th century. In the Hellweglandshaft, between the Haar Hills and the Lippe River, the cities of Dortmund, Soest, and Paderborn flourished along the ancient road Hellweg, but this region is covered with the most fertile loess layer in Westphalia and formed a grain-growing region. …
