A burning appliance used for cooking. It is characterized by its ease of portability, which can be used on the floor, on the dirt floor, outdoors, etc. The name "konro" is thought to be a phonetic contraction of the Song pronunciation of "koro," which means furnace, and is thought to have been introduced by monks who traveled to China during the Muromachi period. It was used as a simple hearth in the lives of ordinary people during the Edo period, and came in square or round shapes. It is made of earthenware or iron, and is mostly unglazed, with iron having poor heat retention. After the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923), charcoal or firewood-powered stoves gradually gave way to gas-powered stoves. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
