Ruan Yuan - Gengen

A scholar and politician from the mid-to-late Qing dynasty in China. His courtesy name was Boyuan, and his pen name was Yundai or Yundai. He was from Yizheng County, Jiangsu Province, and was born in Yangzhou, close to Yizheng. He was a Jinshi in 1789 (the 54th year of the Qianlong era). He was well-liked by Emperor Qianlong, and served as governor of Zhejiang and Jiangxi, and governor of Guangdong and Yungui, achieving great success in government. He was adept at nurturing scholars in various regions, planning and completing compilation projects, and collecting the Qing dynasty classics, which were already in their prime. His works include the "Jingji Sui-Xian," a collection of exegesis from the Han and Tang dynasties, the "Jusankeichu Sokokanki," which was based on the "Seven Classics Mencius Commentary," written by Yamanoi Kanae (Kunlun), a Japanese Confucian scholar from the mid-Edo period, the "Chujinden," a biography of a calendar scientist, the "Huangqing Classic Commentary," which is a compilation of the results of commentaries on classics since the early Qing dynasty, and the "Wenxuanlou Congshu," which includes works by his friends and their children. His collection of poetry and prose is called the "Kenkei Shitsushu." He died in Yangzhou on October 13, 29th year of the reign of Daoguang, and was posthumously named Wenda.
