Konrenji Temple

Japanese: 金蓮寺 - こんれんじ
Konrenji Temple

Located in Takagamine Fujibayashi-cho, Kita-ku, Kyoto City, this temple is the head temple of the Shijo school of the Jishu sect. It is also called Shijo Dojo. In 1308 (Enkei 1), Joa of Kyoto's Gidarin-ji Temple prayed for the safe delivery of Emperor Gofushimi's Empress Kogimon'in, and a prince (Emperor Kogon) was born. In recognition of this achievement, he was appointed founder of Gidarin-ji Temple, renamed Kinren-ji Temple in 1311 (Ocho 1). He later built a temple in Shijo-Kyogoku and was granted the title of Shonin. The temple was destroyed in a great fire in 1788 (Tenmei 8), but was rebuilt in 1825 (Bunsei 8) and moved to its current location in 1926 (Taisho 15). The temple treasures include the 20 volumes of the "Illustrated Biography of Ippen Shonin." The Muromachi period poet Ton'a also lived here.
