The execution of three priests occurred in the early days of the Philippine nationalist movement. The name Gomburza was derived from the first syllable of the three priests' surnames, Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora. In 1872, workers in the Cavite area southwest of Manila rioted in protest against the policies of the reactionary Governor Rafael de Izquierdo. The Governor and other Spaniards, who believed that Filipino lay priests were behind the instigation, publicly executed the three priests on February 17, 1872. This incident sent shock waves through the Filipino people. Jose Rizal's later novel El filibusterismo (The Secession, Rebellion, Violence, Revolution, 1891) is based on this incident.
