Complexan (English spelling)

Japanese: コンプレキサン（英語表記）complexan

A general term for aminopolycarboxylic acids. Also called complexon. Since it has at least one -N(CH ₂ COOH) ₂ , it coordinates with the N of the amine and the O of the carboxyl group, and also forms a chelate, so it has strong coordination properties with various metal ions and forms very stable chelate compounds with many metal ions. Examples include nitrilotriacetic acid N(CH ₂ COOH) ₃ (abbreviated as NTA, H ₃ nta), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (HOOCCH ₂ ) ₂ NCH ₂ CH ₂ N(CH ₂ COOH) ₂ (abbreviated as EDTA, H ₄ edta), and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (HOOCCH ₂ ) ₂ NCH ₂ CH ₂ N(CH ₂ COOH)CH ₂ CH ₂ N(CH ₂ COOH) ₂ (abbreviated as DTPA, H ₅ dtpa).
