Japanese: 枸橘 - カラタチ

A deciduous shrub of the Rutaceae family. It grows to about 2 meters in height. The branches are green and thorny, and the leaves are compound and made up of 3 leaflets. In spring, white flowers with 5 petals bloom before the leaves do. The fruit is spherical and fragrant, ripening to a yellow color, but is so sour that it is inedible. In traditional Chinese medicine, the unripe peel is used as a stomach tonic. Native to China. Used as a hedge. Seed.
