An operation carried out by the US military during the Vietnam War. A type of chemical agent against plants was used in large quantities to kill jungles that served as hiding places for guerrillas. Herbicides such as 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, growth inhibitors, and defoliants such as rhodanese ammonia and zinc chloride were used and sprayed over a wide area by airplane and helicopter. These were said to be mostly harmless to humans and livestock, but a survey by the US side conducted immediately after the operation reported the deaths of livestock. Arsenic compounds also remained in the soil and became a problem as they were dangerous. The US military began Operation Defoliation in South Vietnam in November 1961 and ended it in 1971. The area covered by the operation reached 24,000 km2 , 30% of the total forest. In 1981, the Vietnamese government announced that the defoliation had caused numerous aftereffects on the human body (stillbirths, births of severely disabled children, an abnormal increase in cancers among young people, etc.) mainly in the areas where Operation Defoliation was carried out.
